Frederik and Mary of Denmark reveal their best secret: the photo that proves it
Danish Crown, Exposed After the Home Renovation Requested by queen Mary and king Frederik X of Denmark
Denmark's royals, Mary and Frederik, began enjoying their summer residence at the Chancellery of Fradensborg in May, a place full of history and meaning for them. This mansion, located on an estate with 30 rooms and equestrian areas, was their first home after getting married. This time, the couple debuted a renovated annex that reflects their commitment to sustainability, functional design, and a connection with nature.
A Renovation Process Based on Sustainability
The renovation of the annex—a former circular workshop that's part of the private residence—was carried out with a strong ecological focus. The Danish Royal House revealed that the monarchs participated actively in every phase of the project. They worked alongside architects, contractors, and landscapers to achieve a result that combined aesthetics and environmental responsibility.

This annex was built using recycled and locally sourced materials: elements from the old workshop were reused, and treated woods with a low environmental impact were applied. During the remodeling, they found pieces of green marble from Greenland, which fascinated Mary and Frederik, who decided to incorporate it generously. They also restored old wooden beams that bring warmth and a very special historical character to the modern space.
A Bright Interior and a Garden in Harmony With Nature
The design of the annex stands out for a clean and bright Scandinavian style, with very large windows that connect the interior with the garden and allow natural light to enter. The multifunctional living room is spacious and open, with neutral tones including beige, light gray, and off-white, combined with linen fabrics that add texture without breaking the overall harmony.
The exterior landscape was designed to reflect native nature, without artifices, inspired by Romanticism gardens. According to landscaper Waage Rasmussen, this movement sought to cultivate idealized and authentic nature. The result is a garden that invites relaxation and integrates perfectly with the palace's natural surroundings.
A Reflection of the Personality and Values of the Royals
Beyond aesthetics, this renovation highlights Mary and Frederik's commitment to a sustainable and practical lifestyle. Mary, internationally recognized for her elegance and good taste, now also shows her sensitivity for interior design.

The queen stated that the project is an example of sustainable innovation. She hopes it'll serve as inspiration for future projects both in Denmark and abroad, showing that modernity can coexist with tradition and respect for the environment.
With the renovation of the annex, the Chancellery of Fradensborg becomes an ideal retreat for the royals during the summer season. There, they enjoy an intimate, comfortable environment connected with nature, far from the usual protocol and surrounded by nature and a design that combines history, functionality, and beauty.
