It's official: Frederik confirms the rumors next to Mary
The Danish Royal House issues a statement and clears up all doubts about Frederik of Denmark's family members
On May 26, King Frederik X of Denmark celebrated his 57th birthday in a family-oriented and tradition-filled atmosphere. As he does every year, he stepped out onto the balcony of Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen to greet and receive the affection of the Danish people. At this public event, he was accompanied by Queen Margrethe, his wife Mary, and their three children: Isabella, Vincent, and Josephine, who were cheered by the citizens present.
However, two important members of the royal family were not with them on that balcony: the king's nephews, Nikolai and Felix, eldest sons of Prince Joachim. Despite their absence from the official greeting, the monarch had a very meaningful gesture for them on this special date. Although these young men no longer hold the title of princes, Frederik wanted to honor them with a historic distinction that underscores family unity despite protocol changes.

A tribute that transcends titles and distinctions
Frederik awarded Nikolai and Felix the Grand Cross of the Order of Dannebrog, one of the most prestigious decorations, created in 1671 by King Christian V. This recognition is not a mere honorary title, but rather involves a symbolic commitment to the country's history and tradition.
At a private event before the family breakfast at Amalienborg, the king presented this distinction to his nephews, who from now on will bear the title of counts. As part of the protocol, both must design a personal knight's coat of arms that will be displayed in the Knight's Chapel at Frederiksborg Castle. This is an iconic place in Danish history located in Hillerød.
This gesture by the king shows that, although Nikolai and Felix have lost their titles of princes by decision of Queen Margrethe, they remain an essential part of the royal family. Frederik believes they deserve to be honored for their lineage and their closeness to the monarch.
The close relationship Frederik keeps with his nephews
Nikolai and Felix, despite the physical distance and protocol decisions, keep a close and affectionate relationship with their uncle Frederik. Last April, they accompanied their cousin, Princess Isabella, at the celebration of her 18th birthday, which reflects the importance of family bonds in the Danish Royal House.

Meanwhile, Prince Joachim's family currently resides in Washington, which has created some distance in relations with the main core of the crown. Especially after the queen decided to withdraw royal titles from her children. This situation has caused some distancing, although the commitment to integrate Nikolai and Felix into the family remains in force.
King Frederik, with this act, reaffirms the importance of family ties, beyond changes in titles and official roles. The gesture of awarding them the Grand Cross is a sign of affection and recognition that strengthens unity within the Danish dynasty, even in times of transformation.
