Ander Gil leaves politics: After two years waiting for a ministry, he 'escapes' to the private sector
The former President of the Senate was considered in 2023 to become a member of the PSOE Government and has now joined the consulting firm LLYC
The communication and public affairs consultancy LLYC has hired Ander Gil García (Barakaldo, 1974). He will be the senior director of Public Affairs in Spain and Portugal. The company has secured the services of the PSOE senator for Burgos after almost two years waiting for high-level assignments.
Gil presided over the Upper House between 2021 and 2023. But in the summer two years ago, the PP majority left him without a position. In several socialist predictions, he appeared as a potential minister. But the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, did not count on him. Since then, he has been waiting in the background as a 'regular senator,' in the shadow of the socialist spokesperson Juan Espadas.
"I have resigned from my position as senator for the province of Burgos. I conclude an exciting stage in politics to embark on new professional challenges in the private sector," he wrote on X. The breakup with the PSOE, sources from Ferraz explain, has been very cordial. Despite Sánchez not having required him for 'high-level' functions, the relationship between them was "excellent," these sources indicate.
Ander Gil, 30 years in politics
Gil is a primary education teacher. He began his political career with the position of cultural programr before becoming a councilor in 1995 for the Valle de Mena City Council in Burgos. In this council, he assumed responsibilities for Culture, Education, and Youth.
"The defense of the interests of Burgos and the rural world, from which I come, has been my daily motivation in performing my duties," he explained. Gil hopes that the Senate "continues advancing in the defense of all the territories of this great country. As well as in the recognition of its linguistic and cultural plurality, from dialogue and consensus, an essential basis to protect the State institutions as a pillar of our democracy."

The now former senator has thanked Pedro Sánchez "for his trust and support in the various responsibilities I have assumed throughout my political career." And the PSOE "for the affection and fondness they have always shown me." "I will remain linked to the PSOE as a member. My commitment to the values the party represents remains intact," he emphasizes.
In some sectors of the PSOE, they believe that La Moncloa could have relied on Ander Gil. The Burgos native had an institutional image after succeeding Pilar Llop as president of the Senate in 2021. For two years, he held one of the main positions of the State. But since 2023, he had no projection in the forefront.
