Alejandra Romero, Adolfo Suárez's first granddaughter in the spotlight: This is how the duchess lives
Mariam Suárez's 35-year-old daughter is a lawyer, lives in Madrid, and is the mother of two girls with Pedro Armas
The series "Anatomy of an Instant" is currently in the filming process. The plot of this project revolves around the intricacies of 23-F in which the figure of the politician Adolfo Suárez Illana was a key piece.
Two days after the Coup d'État, Juan Carlos I granted the Dukedom of Suárez to the former UCD leader. A title that is currently held by Alejandra Romero Suárez (Madrid, 1990), his granddaughter.
The young woman is the firstborn of Mariam Suárez, the eldest daughter of the former president, is a mother of two daughters, and lives in Madrid. But, how does she currently live?
Alejandra Romero Suárez: a story marked by tragedy
On January 25, 1990, the former Prime Minister Adolfo Suárez became a grandfather for the first time. Mariam, his firstborn, and her husband, the lawyer Fernando Romero Aznar, welcomed Alejandra, who was born in the Spanish capital.
They say Alejandra was a very desired child. Equally, adored by her parents and the rest of the family. Alejandra's childhood was peaceful and happy in the family home in Puerta de Hierro.

However, in 1992 tragedy struck the family saga. Mariam was pregnant with Fernando, her second child, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
It was for her second child that Mariam delayed her chemotherapy treatment as she was in the middle of her pregnancy. The illness was a hard blow for the family. Also for the marriage.
According to several media outlets, "Mariam underwent several surgeries and harsh treatments for eleven years." A circumstance that took a toll on the marriage. They say that the coexistence between Mariam and Fernando Romero became unsustainable.
The journalist Jaime Peñafiel revealed that "if Mariam hadn't been so religious, she would have separated from Fernando."
The death of Mariam Suárez, the hardest blow for Alejandra Romero
Those years were a "hell" for the family. Mariam continued her fight against cancer when in 2001 Amparo Illana, her grandmother, passed away due to breast cancer that was diagnosed in 1998.
Alejandra Romero devoted herself to her mother and also to her grandfather, who was already beginning to suffer the first symptoms of Alzheimer's.

The most difficult setback for Alejandra came on March 9, 2004, as Mariam Suárez passed away at the age of 41.
Alejandra was only 14 years old when she lost her mother and her brother Fernando was 11.
The young woman attended her mother's funeral devastated at the Cemetery of Peace in Alcobendas (Madrid).
That year was an 'annus horribilis' for Alejandra. Her aunt Sonsoles Illana also had to face breast cancer and her father, Fernando Romero rebuilt his life with the journalist "Meya" Alonso Suau.
Law and a controversial dukedom
After her mother's death, Alejandra Romero withdrew from the spotlight. Mariam Suárez's daughter did not continue the family career in politics. In fact, she studied at the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo and later pursued a degree in Law and Business at ICADE.
Currently, she works as a lawyer at the international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills, located on Velázquez Street in Madrid. In this firm, the Duchess of Suárez specializes in real estate law.
Alejandra has also worked as a volunteer in several NGOs in social integration projects.
She also taught English, French, and mathematics at the family support center named after her mother, Mariam Suárez Illana in Madrid.
The first granddaughter of Adolfo Suárez combines her duties as a lawyer and volunteer with her obligations as Duchess of Suárez.
But, how did Alejandra Romero become Duchess of Suárez? We must go back to February 25, 1981. At that time, Juan Carlos I created this dukedom, which he granted to the former Prime Minister for his work during the Transition to Democracy.

If she hadn't passed away, the title should have fallen to Mariam Suárez. In 2014 Alejandra suffered a new setback after the death of the former UCD leader. It was then that her granddaughter and Mariam's firstborn requested the distinction.
A circumstance that caused certain family disagreements. Especially with her uncle Adolfo Suárez Illana.
The fact that the title fell to Alejandra and not to her uncle Adolfo is due to the approval of the Law of Equality for the Succession of Noble Titles in 2006.

The approval of this law ended the male primacy, and now the title is held by the firstborn.
However, Adolfo Suárez Illana claimed the title for himself. But Alejandra stood her ground.
The secret life of the Duchess of Suárez
Family disagreements were also notable at Alejandra Romero's wedding to the lawyer Pedro Armas, whom she met in school. They started their relationship after meeting during their university years.
On April 21, 2018, no member of the Suárez family attended the couple's wedding. However, according to media reports at the time, "they understood that Alejandra wanted to marry discreetly."
The event took place at the exclusive Club Puerta de Hierro (Madrid) and was marked by privacy. The bride wore a design by Jorge Acuña and went to the chapel of the Puerta de Hierro club with her father.

Fernando Romero attended with Meya, his wife, and Paquito, their only child together. Fernando, the bride's brother, was also present.
Three years after Alejandra's wedding, her brother Fernando chose the same venue to seal his story with the model Berta Pocovi Aizpuru. Like his sister, Fernando married in the strictest privacy.
After their wedding, Pedro Armas and Alejandra Romero moved to Singapore where Pedro pursued a master's degree. Later, they returned to the Spanish capital where they have established their residence.

In 2020, they became parents for the first time to a girl they named Mariam, in tribute to Alejandra's mother. A year and a half later, the couple expanded their family with the arrival of another girl.
Today, the Armas Romero family lives away from the spotlight and free from any controversy.
