Target goes after Walmart and Costco with an unexpected and historic announcement

The retail giant launches something that knocks out its competition in the United States

Target has prepared a summer full of new features in its stores in the United States. The company announced the arrival of 10,000 new products for the summer season. Additionally, it will launch a special event in its branches called "Hello Summer Saturdays," which aims to attract more shoppers and offer different experiences in the stores.

This initiative is part of a plan to boost customer flow and renew consumer interest at a challenging time for retail. Target uses this strategy to increase customer traffic in its stores, heightening competition with other market giants like Costco and Walmart.

New collections and strategies for the season

The new product selection is inspired by the feeling of boardwalk strolls and the relaxed style of coastal life. It includes swimsuits, outdoor entertainment items, snacks, beauty products, and home goods. These items will be available until August, so families can make the most of the summer.

Rick Gomez, Target's Chief Merchandising Officer, highlighted: "Millions of families have been counting the days for summer, and the Target team is excited to be able to help them." Meanwhile, Target launched "Hello Summer Saturdays," an in-store free delivery event that invites Target Circle members to collect exclusive charms and keychains.

Economic context and challenges in the United States

The chain faces a challenging environment due to uncertainty in trade policies. On the same day of the announcement, Walmart withdrew its quarterly forecasts for not being able to anticipate changes in trade tariffs. Although tariffs on China were temporarily reduced for 90 days, Target warned that there will soon be price increases on its products.

About 30% of its private label items come from China, and the company plans to reduce that percentage to 25% by the end of the year. The decline in customer flow is not unfamiliar to Target. After 11 weeks of declines, it recorded a slight increase for two weeks in April, but it fell again in the last week of that month and the first week of May.

Impact on the consumer and new offers

A University of Michigan survey reported a drop in consumer sentiment and an increase in inflation expectations to levels not seen since 1981. This reflects the pressure faced by shoppers in the United States. In response to this situation, Target has launched promotions that include weekly discounts on popular items, pool toys, clothing, swimsuits, and sunscreen.

The "Hello Summer" sale is also in effect until May 26, with special offers leading up to Memorial Day. The company's CEO, Brian Cornell, acknowledged internally that uncertainty surrounding the company's diversity and inclusion policies caused some doubts among staff. However, he reaffirmed the company's values in those areas.
