What Has Happened with the Transfer of Camilo Sesto's Remains: Almost a Year without News
His son Camilo Blanes, who 'could be admitted due to his addiction,' intended to move the singer to Alcoi in 2024
The mausoleum is still waiting for the transfer of the artist's ashes after the postponement in September. Since its completion, it has already become a pilgrimage site and a controversial building subject to debate on social media and national gossip shows, with comments like "Dog house," "not worthy of Camilo," or "it's crap."
We are in May, and the remains of Camilo and his parents at the San Antonio Abad cemetery remain in the same spot where they were left on the day of the universal song author's passing. When fans celebrated the birth date of this universal Alcoyan last year, his ashes were supposed to be moved to the family pantheon that his son's mother commissioned for Camilo Sesto's eternal rest.
Camilo Blanes Cortés was born in Alcoy in 1946 and passed away in Madrid on September 8, 2019, eight days before turning 73. The City Council named him the Favorite Son of the city in November 2016. He dedicated a song to the city, "El meu cor és d'Alcoi." Along with that recognition, he received the Gold Medal of the municipality, and, in addition, the Alameda, one of the main Alcoyan avenues, was renamed after him.
The unique pantheon, apparently completed, consists of two rhomboid structures connected underground. The taller one is the access to the tomb, and from there, it leads to the second structure, of lesser height, intended to house the artist's remains and where there are two small wooden boxes, presumably for his ashes and those of his parents.
Shortly after the construction of this controversial mausoleum was completed, the postponement was announced, and it remains the same as nine months ago. On the mausoleum's door, flowers left by the singer's fans can be seen. In his current grave, there is barely room for four bouquets of flowers.
From Alcoy's City Council, they limit themselves to pointing out that it is a private family matter, and it is up to them to make decisions regarding the transfer of the ashes and their subsequent placement in the new resting place.
It is unknown when the transfer will take place. Another detail that has changed since the mausoleum's construction was announced is that the transfer was going to be a public event; finally, when the postponement was announced, it was stated that the family would carry out the transfer in "the strictest privacy."
Since then, neither the Camilo Sesto Fan Club of Alcoy has any information about when it might be.
Another detail is the lack of identification of the mausoleum, as there is nothing indicating to whom it belongs, which could be one of the finishing touches missing from the pantheon, expected to arrive when the interment occurs. The unique design of the mausoleum was the work of architect Miguel Botella Ruiz-Castillo, with both the project and construction financed by the artist's son. Located in a noble area of the cemetery, it has become a pilgrimage site for fans of the Alcoyan artist.
