Norway accepts it: Mette-Marit has already made a firm decision and there's no turning back
Princess Mette-Marit of Norway Has Made a Firm Decision After Her Son's Scandals That No One Expected
The Norwegian Royal House hasn't gone through its best moment during this past year. The scandal that has shaken the Royal Family has had a name of its own: Marius Borg. The eldest son of Mette-Marit, from a relationship prior to her marriage to Haakon, has become the center of international controversy.
Since his arrest last summer, events have unfolded rapidly and after being released on bail, Marius has finally been charged with no fewer than 23 offenses. Norwegian authorities have confirmed the charges, although the prosecution hasn't yet filed a formal accusation. However, the news has caused deep unrest in the country.

Marius's relationship with the Royal Family has always been a subject of attention. Although he isn't officially part of the institution, he has lived for years in the palace. Some of the acts for which he is now allegedly under investigation have taken place in that same residence.
Norway Already Knows the Latest on Mette-Marit
This has outraged Norwegians and the population has demanded explanations and, above all, has demanded accountability. The response from the Royal House has been clear and they have publicly distanced themselves from any involvement. From the very beginning, the Norwegian Royal House has reiterated that Marius isn't an official member of royalty. Even so, media and social pressure hasn't decreased.
Amidst this storm, Princess Mette-Marit has made a firm decision: she has chosen silence and has decided not to make any public statements about her son's case. She has ruled out doing so in the future. Her stance has been interpreted as a way to protect the institution.

Prince Haakon hasn't made statements either. Although at one point he accompanied Marius to a rehabilitation center in the United Kingdom, his words have been few. Apparently, the young man has admitted that some of his actions have been influenced by substance use.
Meanwhile, Ingrid Alexandra and Sverre Magnus, children of the marriage, have sought to strengthen the image of the monarchy. In recent days, they have shared several joint appearances on social media. In one of them, they have shown their support for the national women's soccer team and the action has been read as part of a strategy to divert attention.
Mette-Marit Keeps Remaining Silent
The Royal Family has tried to keep normality in their official acts and they have attended events, commitments, and even military ceremonies. Princess Ingrid Alexandra, who has followed Princess Leonor's steps in her military training, has established herself as a symbol of continuity. Her parents have chosen to strengthen her image, aware that the future of the Crown depends largely on her.

The indictment of Marius Borg has caused a new media earthquake. Although it isn't surprising, it has confirmed what many feared and Norway already accepts it: Mette-Marit has closed the door for good. She has chosen not to speak further about her son and has preferred to protect the institution's legacy.
With that decision, the princess has marked a turning point and despite the pressure and criticism, she has kept firm. For her, silence has been the only possible way out and there's no turning back. The Crown has set its path and the country, between disappointment and respect, has begun to accept it.
