Mary of Denmark and the decision she must make now: Federico is leaving
The Danish monarchs make a U-turn in their strategy
On April 21, 2025, the world was shaken by the passing of Pope Francis, and with it, a series of decisions were unleashed within the European royal houses. The funeral will be held on April 26 at St. Peter's Basilica, and the monarchs must decide whether they will attend this event. Each royal family has its own reasons for choosing how to participate.
The difficult decision of the Dutch royalty
One of the most talked-about cases has been that of the royal family of the Netherlands. Although Queen Máxima keeps a close relationship with Pope Francis, King Willem-Alexander and she have decided not to attend the funeral. The main reason is that the same day marks King's Day in the Netherlands, a festivity that directly involves the king and his family.

Although Máxima is very close to the Pope, the Royal House chose not to interrupt the celebrations. However, they decided to adjust the schedule of the festivities, moving them one hour later so they would not coincide with the Pope's ceremony. Instead, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs will attend as government representatives.
Other kings who will attend the funeral
While some monarchs choose not to attend, other kings have already confirmed their presence, among them are the kings of Belgium, Philippe and Mathilde, who are very Catholic. The monarchs completed the Camino de Santiago and participated in the Mass of the Lord's Supper during Holy Week. They did not hesitate to confirm that they would be present at the Pope's funeral: for them, it is an act of respect and homage.
Meanwhile, Prince William will represent the British royal family. Although Charles III, as head of the Anglican Church, had a close relationship with Pope Francis, it will be his son who attends in his place. This is reminiscent of when, in 2005, Charles III postponed his wedding to Camilla to attend John Paul II's funeral.

The situation of the Danish royal family
In Denmark, King Frederik X has a trip scheduled to Japan from Wednesday to Friday, which casts doubt on his presence at Pope Francis's funeral. Due to this commitment, it is possible that he may not be able to arrive in time for the event at the Vatican. If this happens, it is likely that Princess Mary, who will remain in Denmark, will assume the representation of the Danish royal family.
The situation of Frederik X's trip makes Mary's participation the most viable option. The Danish royal family has had precedents of representation at important funerals. This was the case with John Paul II's funeral, where Queen Margrethe was present on behalf of the Danish royalty.
