Prince Harry once again shook the foundations of the British monarchy by considering a radical change in his identity. According to the Daily Mail, the youngest son of King Charles III thought about stopping the use of the Mountbatten-Windsor surname. His intention was to adopt the surname Spencer, in honor of his mother, Princess Diana.
During a visit to London in June 2023, Harry met with his uncle Charles Spencer to discuss the matter. The Earl of Spencer listened to him empathetically, but advised him not to go ahead with the change. He warned him that the legal obstacles would be numerous and difficult to overcome.
The Symbolic Weight of the Mountbatten-Windsor Surname
Mountbatten-Windsor combines the surnames of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, and represents the official lineage of their descendants. However, Harry was about to give these up and use his mother's surname.
Advised by his uncle, Charles Spencer, he ended up dismissing the idea. In fact, his uncle told him that if he went through with his idea, he could face many problems throughout his life.
He is not the only one who carries the surnames; Harry and Meghan's children have them on their birth certificates. Changing it would mean publicly severing his link with the Royal House.

This decision would have been a severe emotional blow for King Charles III, in the midst of his battle with cancer. Although he and Harry have kept some contact, the distance between them remains deep. This gesture could have marked a point of no return in their relationship.
Harry has shown on several occasions his discomfort with the monarchical institution and its internal dynamics. Since his move to California, he has tried to build a new life with Meghan Markle and their children. The surname Spencer represents for him a symbol of freedom and personal identity.
