Walmart copies Amazon and gives the best news in the United States: lots of money

The American retail giant follows in the footsteps of Jeff Bezos's colossal company and stars in a plot twist

Walmart closed the first quarter of 2025 with positive results in its global e-commerce for the first time in its history. Revenue in this sector grew by 22%, a clear indication of the rise of the distribution giant in the digital market. This progress is accompanied by a 50% growth in its advertising revenue, which, along with customer memberships, represents 25% of its profits.

The Walmart Connect platform has played a key role in this increase, achieving a 31% rise in revenue within the United States. This tool allows brands of different sizes to reach customers through advertising that combines physical and digital media. This plan includes everything from in-store ads, audiovisual and radio formats, to promotions in home deliveries, thus maximizing reach and effectiveness.

International expansion and the role of Flipkart

Walmart's advertising business also improved by 20% in foreign markets, with Flipkart, its subsidiary in India, playing a prominent role. The acquisition of 77% of Flipkart in 2018, for 16 billion dollars, was at the time the most expensive purchase in e-commerce. Currently, Flipkart's valuation is around 40 billion, reaffirming its strategic importance for Walmart.

The advertising segment showed the greatest growth, surpassing memberships, which also registered a significant increase. Membership revenue grew by almost 15%, driven by the increase in Walmart+ subscribers and the growth of the Sam's Club model in China. These two pillars contributed decisively to the operating profit, which increased by 4.4%, reaching 7.135 billion dollars on total revenue of 163.981 billion.

Inspiration from Amazon and new acquisitions

Walmart has followed the example of Amazon, whose advertising business is based on product promotion and streaming. As part of its expansion in advertising, Walmart purchased the TV manufacturer Vizio in 2024 to enhance its campaigns. With these actions, Walmart seeks to consolidate its digital presence and increase its competitiveness in the U.S. market.

Challenges and digital future

The retail giant is betting on a diversified strategy that combines e-commerce, advertising, and memberships to sustain its growth. The combination of these areas has proven effective in attracting customers and increasing revenue in an increasingly digitized market. Walmart's future will largely depend on its ability to adapt and expand its digital ecosystem.
