Urgent notice from SSA in the US: If this arrives on your phone, do it immediately

They clear up doubts about an email from the United States Social Security that has caused great confusion

Millions of Social Security beneficiaries in the US have received an email with the subject "There's Still Time" ("Aún hay tiempo"). This message, sent from an official address ending in .gov, is part of a campaign by the SSA to urge users to create or update their online account.

Confusion among millions of Americans with the SSA: they clarify what's happening with this email

The confusion arises because many fear that this type of email is an attempt at fraud, but in this case, the message is legitimate. The SSA is notifying beneficiaries that they need to migrate their old "my Social Security" accounts to more secure platforms like Login.gov or ID.me. This measure aims to improve security and simplify access to online services.

If you received this email, it is recommended that you follow the instructions and update your online account. The transition to Login.gov or ID.me is especially important for those who created their account before September 18, 2021. Although it is not mandatory for now, the SSA has announced that in the future, it will remove the option to log in with old usernames and passwords.

Why create an online account? The SSA is adamant

Having an online account offers multiple benefits. You can quickly and securely access your personal information. You also have the possibility to carry out procedures without needing to visit an office.

It reduces the risk of fraud, as more robust authentication methods are used. Additionally, with the new security policies, certain changes, such as updating banking information, can only be done online or in person, eliminating the option to do so by phone.

For the moment, it is not mandatory to create or update your online account. However, the SSA strongly recommends doing so to avoid interruptions in access to services and benefits. It is expected that, in the future, authentication through Login.gov or ID.me will be the only method available to access Social Security's online services.

SSA's objectives with this change

The SSA aims to improve the security of beneficiaries' accounts and reduce fraud and protect personal information. Additionally, it wants to simplify the login and access process to services and facilitate interaction with other government services.

If you receive an email from the SSA asking you to update your online account, do not ignore it. It is a legitimate measure that seeks to protect you and facilitate your access to Social Security services.
