Urgent notice from the United States SSA about Medicare: You'll have to pay more

The United States Social Security reveals an important detail that will affect the pockets of millions of citizens

The Social Security Administration (SSA) of the United States has issued an important notice that will affect many Medicare beneficiaries. If your income is high, you will likely have to pay more for your monthly premiums in 2025.

The SSA has reported that, starting in 2025, some Medicare beneficiaries will have to pay an additional monthly adjustment on their premiums. This adjustment is based on income level and applies to Parts B and D, which cover medical services and prescription drugs, respectively.

SSA notice on Medicare: who will have to pay more?

This adjustment, known as the Income-Related Monthly Adjustment, affects individuals with higher incomes. The SSA determines who must pay this adjustment using tax information provided by the IRS, generally from two years prior.

For example, to calculate it, the income reported on the 2023 tax return will be used. This is an additional surcharge that is added to the standard Medicare premiums for individuals with incomes above certain thresholds.

This surcharge applies to both Medicare Part B and Part D. The exact amount of the adjustment depends on the income level and can vary each year.

Which parts of Medicare does it affect and how does it impact Americans?

The surcharge affects Medicare Part B, covering medical services like doctor visits and outpatient care, and Medicare Part D, covering prescription drugs. If you only have one of these parts, the adjustment will apply only to that part. If you have both, the adjustment will apply to both premiums.

For many beneficiaries, this adjustment represents a significant additional expense. Although it affects less than 5% of Medicare beneficiaries, those who must pay the IRMAA may see considerable increases in their monthly premiums.

How you can request a reduction in the Medicare adjustment

If your income has decreased due to events such as retirement, job loss, or the death of a spouse, you can request a reduction in the adjustment. To do so, you must submit form SSA-44 and provide documentation supporting the change in your income.

It is essential for Medicare beneficiaries to stay alert to communications from the SSA and review their tax returns to understand how the IRMAA may affect their premiums. If you believe you may be subject to this adjustment or if your circumstances have changed, consider contacting the SSA to discuss your options and possible reductions in premiums.
