Family Dollar's U-turnaround after Dollar Tree's move in the United States: official

Family Dollar Joins Uber Eats While Facing the Closure of Numerous Stores

Family Dollar has made an unexpected shift in its strategy by joining Uber Eats amid a series of changes and challenges. This decision comes just as the discount store chain prepares to face a change in ownership and the closure of multiple locations.

Family Dollar Joins Uber Eats

Uber Eats has added Family Dollar to its platform, allowing customers to order household items and food directly from the stores. This partnership aims to expand shopping options for consumers and adapt to the growing demand for home deliveries.

Now, Uber Eats users will be able to receive Family Dollar products at their homes. Of course, this increases shoppers' convenience and gives the chain a stronger presence in e-commerce.

Change Of Ownership And Sale Of Family Dollar

The decision to join Uber Eats coincides with a major ownership transition. Dollar Tree, which acquired Family Dollar in 2015, has decided to sell the discount chain to Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management, two private equity firms. The sale was made for one billion dollars, a figure considerably lower than the $8.5 billion Dollar Tree paid a decade ago.

This sale marks the end of an era for Family Dollar, which failed to successfully integrate with Dollar Tree's model. The chain has faced several operational problems, including supply chain difficulties and low profitability at many of its locations.

Family Dollar Has New Owners | Family Dollar

Family Dollar's new owners will face several challenges. First, the brand has a problem with customers, who have shown little loyalty due to prices and product quality. This has been one of the most critical points that the new owners will need to address.

In addition, Dollar Tree has already started closing several stores. In 2024, more than 600 stores were closed and more closures are planned in the future. It has also raised prices on more than 300 products, increasing from $1.25 to $1.50, which could further discourage customers.

Closures And Uncertain Future

As of February 1, 2025, Dollar Tree operated approximately 16,500 stores in the United States and Canada. However, with the increase in closures and uncertainty around pricing strategies, the company faces fierce competition in the discount store sector.

Meanwhile, Dollar General, a direct competitor of Dollar Tree, is also reviewing its store network. In fact, it has begun to implement its own store closure plan. This trend reflects the difficult economic climate affecting discount stores and the need to adapt to new market conditions.

What's Next For Family Dollar?

Despite the challenges, Family Dollar has found a new path with its partnership with Uber Eats. This move aims to strengthen its online presence and reach a broader audience. However, the chain will still have to overcome inconsistent pricing issues and a lack of consumer loyalty.

The new owners will need to implement significant changes in Family Dollar's operations to revitalize the brand and improve its competitiveness. Although the future is uncertain, the partnership with Uber Eats could be the first step toward a transformation in the way Family Dollar connects with its customers.
