Constantine II's funeral: 'Alexia of Greece, wife of a Canary Islander investigated for fraud'

At 57, she lives in Lanzarote with her husband, architect Carlos Morales, who is under investigation in the 'Operación Unión' case

This Monday, January 16, the Greek Royal Family held the funeral of the last king of the Hellenes, Constantine II, who passed away last January 10 in Athens at the age of 82. Both Queen Emerita Doña Sofía, sister of the former monarch, and his nephews – Pablo, Nicolás, Philippos, and Princess Theodora – gathered in the days prior at the Tatoi cemetery to finalize the burial arrangements.

At Monday's funeral, Constantine of Greece's relatives could be seen very united after the sad loss, as well as a notably affected Prince Pablo of Greece – who would take the position of head of the Greek Royal House after his father's death – supported by his wife Marie-Chantal.

At the farewell to the last monarch of Greece, Alexia of Greece was also present, the firstborn of Constantine and Anne-Marie of Denmark, who leads a very discreet life in Lanzarote. The Spanish island has been her home since she moved there in 2004 with her husband, the Canarian architect Carlos Morales.

Alexia of Greece, Confidant of Cristina de Borbón and Wife of Canarian Carlos Morales

The niece of the emeritus kings of Spain and firstborn daughter of the last Hellenic monarchs, Alexia of Greece (57 years old), lives in Lanzarote far from media interest together with her husband, architect Carlos Morales. His problems with the justice system led the couple, who were regulars in the tabloid press some years ago, to decide to disappear from the world of fame.

Like all her siblings and parents, Alexia has been very connected to Spain, where they were able to live peacefully for periods thanks to the generosity of her aunt, Doña Sofía. Alexia is one of Infanta Cristina's best friends, who is her age, and in Spain she found love with the Canarian architect Carlos Morales Quintana.

Her childhood was spent between the Greek school in London and the Froebel College of the Rochampton Institute, part of the University of Surrey. There, she graduated in History and specialized in Education. From 1989 to 1992, she worked as a primary school teacher in a school in the British capital. Later in Barcelona, she shared an apartment with her cousin Cristina de Borbón and specialized in teaching children with Down syndrome.

After their wedding in 1999, Carlos and Alexia settled in Barcelona. There, Carlos Morales set up his own architecture studio with his friend and partner Luis Ribas Estalella. Together, they created the Morales Ribas Arquitectura S.L. office, located at 304 Legislature Street, whose business activity was "technical services in architecture and urban planning." They only kept active for a year and a half.

Then Alexia's husband set up his own studio under the name Carlos Morales Arquitecto S.L. In 2004, the couple settled in his homeland, the Canary Islands. Together, they've had four children: Arrieta (2002), Ana María (2003), Carlos (2005), and Amelia (2007). The couple has lived since then in Puerto Calero, in the municipality of Yaiza (Lanzarote), and it is in the Canary Islands where, more than a decade ago, they began to have a series of problems with the justice system.

Carlos Morales, Involved in the "Unión Case"

It was on May 25, 2009, when their life of privilege and fame changed. That day, the Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard searched the professional architecture studio that Carlos Morales has in the tourist development of Puerto Calero due to his alleged connection to a real estate corruption scheme in the island town of Arrecife, as part of "Operación Unión," so named after the bar where those involved met – and for which the former president of the island council, Dimas Martín, was sentenced to seven years in prison.

The Civil Guard officers carried out a search of the premises of the then Queen of Spain's nephew-in-law in search of documentation, both on paper and in digital format, related to an investigation that sought to clarify the relationships between politicians, officials, and businesspeople in urban planning operations and contract awards.

The searches also extended to two other professional offices; one of them, that of the architects who were drafting the General Urban Development Plan of Arrecife, Pérez Servicios y Desarrollos de Arquitectura, located at 7 Vals de la Torre Street. The numerous searches carried out by the Civil Guard in homes and offices were ordered by the judge of the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 5 of Arrecife, César Romero Pamparacuatro, who ordered the arrest, among nearly thirty defendants, of the former president of the island council Dimas Martín, the first deputy mayor of Arrecife City Council, Ubaldo Becerra, and the mayor of Yaiza, Gladys Acuña, of the Lanzarote Independent Party (PIL). The last two are good friends of Carlos Morales.

Days later, on June 3, the nephew-in-law of the kings of Spain gave a statement for six hours at the Civil Guard post in Costa Teguise, where the UCO had set up its operations center. He did so to answer questions about his alleged involvement in construction on non-developable land and about the alleged payment of supposedly illegal commissions in several institutions in Lanzarote, as payment for success in certain administrative procedures.

The investigation into Carlos Morales – who was acquitted by the justice system as "there was no urban planning crime" – was carried out as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of influence peddling and against land use planning; and it would be related to his activity as a representative of the company Promociones Conjunto La Vereda S.L. and as sole administrator of the construction company Island Knowledge On Settlement S.L. (IKOS). The latter company was created by Carlos Morales on July 3, 2003, establishing its registered office in a premises in Puerto Calero. His brother Miguel Ángel Morales is listed as proxy and its assets are significant: €2,674,671, with sales close to one million euros in the last fiscal year.

Its corporate purpose is: "The construction of all kinds of works on its own or others' behalf; the execution of works and services contracts; as well as the purchase, sale, and leasing of properties, land, and plots." In turn, this company holds shares in another real estate company, Proat Canarias 2005 SL, with its registered office in Tenerife, and which is a shareholder of Promociones Conjunto la Vereda S.L., of which Morales appears as representative. The company, dedicated to the "construction, promotion, marketing, and operation of real estate," is owned by Catalan businessman José Espelt Civit, a man close to FC Barcelona and owner of the well-known Hoteles 10 chain, among many other real estate and tourism businesses.
