They no longer hide: they reveal the worst about King Frederik and Mary of Denmark
The secrets of the Danish Royal House are revealed as it has been 21 years since the marriage of Frederik and Mary
Mary of Denmark and Frederik celebrate 21 years of marriage with an image of unity, however, behind that facade, their love story has had complicated episodes. In the Copenhagen Cathedral, on May 14, 2004, Frederik vowed to Mary: "I love her and I will protect her with all my love." Since then, their romance has been analyzed under a constant magnifying glass.
A beginning full of obstacles
The meeting between Mary Donaldson and Frederik was almost casual, in a Sydney pub, but not everything was simple. Queen Margrethe, the prince's mother, was initially reluctant to accept Mary Donaldson as a future daughter-in-law, although the Australian managed to earn the monarch's respect. At the wedding, the queen expressed her affection and highlighted Mary's courage for taking on her life in Denmark, assuring that the country welcomed her "with open arms."

Before his relationship with Mary, Frederik had a complicated past. He dated model Malou Aamund for three years, but the Royal House forced them to separate after a scandal in which she was arrested during a car trip. This history cast a shadow on his public image.
Parties, alcohol, and controversies
Frederik was known for his partying style, something that didn't change after marrying Mary, which caused conflicts in their marriage. In 2008, it was reported that he was kicked out of a nightclub in Beijing after a night of drunkenness. A few months earlier, Mary had taken her husband out of a bar in Denmark, tired of his excesses.

In 2009, a writer claimed that the "excessive alcohol consumption" of the prince became a nightmare for the couple. Two years later, Frederik was recorded dancing with a blonde woman shortly before the birth of their twins. Later, in 2018, a controversial film was released showing Prince Frederik's youthful years, with scenes of sex with models, which deeply upset Mary.
The Genoveva case crisis
The most delicate situation came in the fall of 2023, when photos of Frederik with Mexican socialite Genoveva Casanova in Madrid were published. The images caused a global scandal. Casanova denied any romantic relationship, claiming they were just friends, while the Royal House opted for strict silence.

Soon after, Mary was seen crying at an airport in New Zealand and shared a message on Instagram that was interpreted as a call for reflection on life. The media pressure was growing, and the health of the marriage was in doubt.
The unexpected abdication of Queen Margrethe was seen as a strategic move to strengthen Mary as the future queen. And to avoid a possible divorce that would have damaged the Danish crown. For now, the couple remains together, although with visible scars.
