U-turn by Aldi in the United States: It Won't Please Sam's Club and Target

The German giant implements something new in American territory that puts the national giants in check

Aldi is moving forward steadily with a very ambitious growth plan: the supermarket chain intends to open 800 new stores in the United States by 2028. This is a strategic step for the brand, which seeks to further establish itself in a competitive market. The expansion comes at a key moment, as consumers are looking for more economical options due to inflation and the increased cost of living due to tariffs.

An Unprecedented Growth Strategy

In this context, Aldi is clear that it's time to take advantage of the demand for low prices and the growing preference for affordable alternatives. This year, the chain plans to open 225 stores across the United States, which will represent a milestone in its growth. Thus, Aldi would surpass any other expansion it has previously undertaken in nearly 50 years of presence in the country.

Openings and Renovations: Aldi's Formula

Aldi's expansion plan not only includes the construction of new stores but also the renovation of locations acquired from other chains. Aldi bought 170 stores from the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket brands in recent years, and is now adapting them to its own model. This combination of opening new branches and adapting existing stores will allow the chain to grow rapidly.

With these openings and conversions, Aldi will position itself as the third-largest supermarket chain in the country, behind Walmart and Kroger. This strong growth is a clear indication that Aldi is ready to compete in the U.S. market with strength.

Expansion into New Cities and Key Regions

The chain is focusing its growth on areas with great potential, such as the southeastern United States, where it has experienced very solid growth in recent years. It is also exploring new locations in other cities with high development potential, such as Las Vegas. Aldi opened two stores in this city on April 24, 2025, and plans to continue expanding with more openings throughout this year.

In addition to Las Vegas, Aldi is also establishing stores in the northeastern and midwestern United States. These regions have shown great interest in economical options, making them key areas for its expansion. The company is also focused on continuing to establish its presence in states like California and Arizona.

A Local Approach for Each Community

Aldi is not only expanding its store network but also adapting its offerings to local needs. In each new location, the chain focuses on offering fresh, quality products at low prices, which remains its main appeal to consumers.

The German company is positioning itself as a very strong alternative to other large supermarket chains by focusing on convenience, accessibility, and quality. Aldi's expansion reflects a shift in shopping habits and is designed to meet the demands of modern consumers.
