US Social Security statement about the IRS: time is running out, only days left
Millions of Americans must pay attention to the deadline given by the SSA to file their tax returns
The United States Social Security and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have issued an urgent notice for natural disaster victims: the deadline to file the 2024 tax return is May 1, 2025. If you are in an affected area, it is crucial that you act now. Forgetting is prohibited!
Important alert from the United States Social Security: ends on May 1
The IRS has granted an automatic extension to individuals and businesses in areas declared disaster zones by FEMA. This measure applies to those who suffered damage from hurricanes, floods, or wildfires in 2024. The states and regions included are:
- Florida: the entire state, due to hurricanes Milton and Helene.
- Alaska: residents of Juneau affected by floods.
- California: especially the southern part of the state, due to wildfires.
- Kentucky: after severe storms.
- New Mexico: Chaves County.
- West Virginia: Mercer County.

Other states: parts of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton.
What does this extension cover? The SSA warns millions of Americans
Until May 1, you can file the 2024 tax return and file pending 2023 returns if you had a valid extension. You can also make estimated tax payments for September 2024, January, and April 2025.
Additionally, it is possible to file quarterly payroll and excise tax returns. It is important to note that payments related to 2023 returns, which were due in April 2024, are not covered by this extension.
This will happen to you if you don't file the return on time
If you don't meet the May 1 deadline, you could face serious consequences, such as late filing penalties. You must add the accumulated interest on pending payments and additional penalties if you don't request the corresponding waiver.

The IRS automatically identifies taxpayers in the affected areas. However, if you live outside these areas but your tax records are there, you must call 866-562-5227 to request the extension.
How to claim disaster losses?
If you suffered damages not covered by insurance, you can deduct those losses on your tax return. You have the option to do so on the 2024 return or the 2023 return. To do this, use Form 4684 and make sure to include the corresponding FEMA disaster declaration number.
Don't miss this opportunity, file your 2024 tax return on time and avoid possible penalties. Remember, forgetting is prohibited. For more information, visit the official IRS website: irs.gov.
