United States Social Security Administration (SSA) has issued a clarification that benefits many Americans. According to current regulations, a specific type of workers who have suffered an injury or illness can apply for disability benefits through an expedited process.

This provision is part of the initiative popularly known as "Wounded Warriors." Social Security describes it in an official publication as an expedited processing procedure for veterans who are wounded or have a permanent and total VA disability.

These benefits are included in two main programs, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSDI is aimed at people who have worked enough and paid into Social Security. Meanwhile, SSI is focused on individuals with limited financial resources.

Both require that the disability prevents performing substantial work for at least one year or could result in death. SSA has clarified that this right is not conditioned on receiving VA payments or on the location where the injury occurred.

It can happen in combat, training, or outside the country. The essential point is that the disability originated during active duty since October 1, 2001. In addition, since March 2014, veterans with a 100% permanent and total (P&T) VA rating can also benefit from expedited processing.

In many cases, SSA automatically identifies their eligibility. If this doesn't happen, the veteran must mention it when submitting the application and present the VA letter certifying the 100% P&T condition. Alternatively, the veteran should clearly indicate that the disability began during active duty after October 1, 2001.

In the case of SSI, although it can't be applied for solely online, SSA can start the SSDI process and then request more information to complete the process.
