Latest from US Social Security on Medicare clears up all doubts

The U.S. SSA has made it clear to millions of Americans which procedure they must always complete to cancel this part

In recent weeks, the Social Security Administration (SSA) in the United States has made a key point clear about Medicare Part B. Although it is technically optional, there are essential formal steps required to cancel it, with significant risks if they are not followed correctly.

SSA's Firm Notice About Medicare: How to Cancel Part B

The SSA reminded that, to cancel Part B, it is necessary to submit the CMS‑1763 form and, when possible, attend a personal interview with a representative at the local office. This interview has two objectives: to explain the risks of canceling and to ensure that the applicant understands the reasons and consequences. It can't be done online.

It is also not enough to keep the Medicare card: if you do not return it, you will continue paying the premium. To cancel Part B, the process is simple but strict: obtain the CMS‑1763 form and call 1‑800‑772‑1213 or visit your local SSA office.

Complete the personal interview, either by phone or in person, submit the signed form, and return the Medicare card. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the month following the receipt of the form and card.

What Is Mandatory to Avoid Greater Risks?

Although you are not required to have Part B, it is mandatory to complete those steps if you decide to cancel it. It is vital to have alternative insurance, since without coverage you could face a medical gap and the late enrollment penalty premium.

The 2025 premium amount is 185 USD per month. If you cancel and later want to re-enroll, you could pay an additional 10% for each year without coverage, permanently.

The SSA advises being cautious and considering this before canceling Part B. If you have medical coverage through your job or your spouse's, you may be able to opt for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) to avoid penalties.

If you do not have other insurance, cancel, you could have a period without coverage and a higher cost if you return. If you have financial difficulties, you could qualify for a Medicare Savings Program or receive additional help ("Extra Help") with Part B and D premiums.

Why Is Medicare So Important? How to Contact the SSA

Medicare Part B covers essential services: medical consultations, outpatient treatments, tests, vaccines, and medical equipment. In addition, it serves as basic coverage: if you have additional insurance, Medicare is usually the first to cover expenses. It is also mandatory if you want to enroll in Part C (Medicare Advantage) or Part D (prescription drugs).

To manage the cancellation: Phone: 1‑800‑772‑1213 (TTY: 1‑800‑325‑0778), Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the local office, a personal interview is required; many now serve without an appointment, but you could face waits. For submissions: send the signed CMS‑1763 form and the Medicare card to your local office.
