Latest from SSA on IRS is final: Deadline ends in America

Don't get distracted for even a second with United States Social Security: if you don't meet the deadline, you'll pay the price

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the United States has issued a clear warning. The deadline to file 2024 tax returns is about to end, and there are no more automatic extensions available.

This reminder is especially relevant for U.S. citizens and residents living abroad, who received an automatic two-month extension to file their returns.

Final deadline to file tax returns in the United States: SSA is clear

Originally, the deadline to file tax returns was April 15, 2025. However, for those residing outside the United States on that date, the SSA granted an automatic two-month extension, moving the deadline to June 16.

Not filing the return before the mentioned day may result in fines and accumulation of interest on taxes owed. It is important to note that this extension only applies to the filing deadline, not to the payment of taxes. Any taxes owed had to be paid before April 15, 2025.

Are there exceptions for those living abroad?

Yes, U.S. citizens and residents who live and work outside the United States are entitled to the automatic two-month extension. To qualify, they must attach a statement to their tax form explaining that their main residence or place of work is outside the United States and Puerto Rico.

If you can't file your return before June 16, you may request an additional extension until October 15, 2025 by submitting Form 4868. This request must be made before June 16. It is important to remember that this extension only applies to the filing deadline, not to the payment of taxes.

What must those living abroad report to the SSA?

If you live abroad and receive Social Security benefits, it is essential to keep the Social Security Administration (SSA) informed about your address and any changes in your situation. This ensures that your benefits are not interrupted and that you comply with all corresponding tax obligations.

If you need more time, you must formally request it before that date. In addition, it is crucial to keep the SSA informed about your situation if you reside outside the United States. Fulfilling these obligations will prevent penalties and ensure the continuity of your benefits.
