The US government and SSA settle many people's doubts: it's vital, don't hesitate
The latest from Social Security is more relevant than ever to millions of citizens: You have every right
In an effort to clarify the doubts that have arisen among thousands of immigrants, the US Government and the SSA have explained in full detail what Enumeration at Entry (EAE) is. This is a program that allows lawful permanent residents (people with a green card) to automatically obtain their Social Security Number (SSN) upon entering the country.
What Is Enumeration at Entry and How Does It Work? SSA and Government Are Clear
When a person applies for an immigrant visa (forms DS‑230 or DS‑260) in their home country, they can request to be assigned an SSN. Then, the Department of State sends that information to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and upon arrival in the United States, CBP (customs) itself passes that data to USCIS.

Finally, USCIS transmits the information to SSA so the SSN issuance process is activated without the person needing to go to an office. The program is designed to eliminate the need to submit form SS‑5 in person.
Once the visa is approved and after entry, SSA sends the card by mail in about three weeks. If it doesn't arrive within that period, the person can call or go to a local office.
Why Is EAE So Important?
This process greatly simplifies the lives of immigrants. Without EAE, a newly arrived person needs to go in person to the Social Security, fill out forms, and wait several weeks. With this automation, everything is faster and safer.
In addition, the SSN is essential for working, opening bank accounts, and accessing basic services in the United States. It is directly linked to Social Security, and properly controlling its assignment prevents fraud.

There is also another similar program called Enumeration Beyond Entry (EBE), aimed at people already in the US legally who are applying for residency, naturalization, or a work permit; they complete forms such as I‑485 or I‑765 and USCIS transfers the information to SSA.
Main Rights and What Immigrants Can Request
Lawful permanent resident visa holders have the right to receive their SSN and card free of charge. If it doesn't arrive within the indicated time (about two or three weeks from arrival or authorization), they can report it to Social Security. There are no fees or additional complications here.
In addition, immigrants can request a replacement card, update their name or status when these details change. This is also done via EBE, in forms such as I‑765, I‑485, or N‑400, if the process includes updating personal data.
SSA is committed to using only verified information, collected by the Department of State and DHS. The cooperation network among these agencies ensures that identity data are correct and up to date. This strengthens security, trusts official data, and reduces errors in number assignment.
