The US Social Security Administration settles the doubts: it will be yours and free

The SSA makes it very clear: you can get copies of your W-2 forms by doing this simple gesture

The United States Social Security Administration (SSA) has clarified a common question: is it possible to obtain copies of your wage and tax statements (W-2 forms) for free? The answer is yes, but with certain conditions. The SSA can provide you with copies or printouts of your W-2 forms from 1978 to the present.

SSA clarifies doubts for Americans: from what year can you request copies?

This is useful if you need to support your work history or verify past earnings. If you need the copies for Social Security-related purposes, such as correcting your earnings records or applying for benefits, the service is free.

However, if you need them for other purposes, be careful. For filing federal or state tax returns, establishing residency, or applying for private pension benefits, you will need to pay a fee of $126 per request.

How to easily request the copies?

To request your W-2 forms, follow these steps. Write a letter that includes your Social Security Number (SSN) and your name as it appears on your Social Security card.

Additionally, add any other name that appears on your forms, your full mailing address, and the year or years for which you need copies. You also need your contact phone number and the reason for your request.

If the request is for non-Social Security purposes, include a check or money order for $126 per request, payable to "Social Security Administration." You can also pay by credit card by completing form SSA-714.

Send your request to Social Security Administration, Office of Central Operations, Division of Earnings and Business Services (P.O. Box 33003), Baltimore, MD 21290-3003.

This is the time the process takes: SSA confirms it

The processing time may vary. Some users have reported that it can take between 60 and 90 days, or even longer, depending on the SSA's workload. It is advisable to send your request well in advance if you need the documents for a specific procedure.

However, you can also obtain a transcript or copy of your W-2 form through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). However, keep in mind that state and local tax information is not available if you filed your tax return online.
